Ready to Assemble Bathroom Vanities

White Shaker Bathroom Vanity Cabinets

What are RTA bathroom vanity cabinets?

An RTA bathroom vanity is a ready-to-assemble bathroom cabinet that has a sink added to it. The cabinet components are all included and packed in flat boxes for shipping. Holes are predrilled, the sides are finished, and all of the hardware is included, but the final assembly needs to be completed after purchase. The countertop, sink, and plumbing are usually purchased separately.

RTA bath vanity cabinets are similar to RTA kitchen cabinets. The biggest difference is the depth. Bathroom cabinets are typically 21 inches deep while kitchen base cabinets are usually 24 inches deep. Although RTA bathroom cabinets usually come in standard sizes (24 inches, 30 inches, 36 inches, 48 inches, and 60 inches) they can often be ordered in other configurations.

Do RTA bathroom vanities need to be glued?

Though not absolutely necessary, we recommend using wood glue when assembling our ready to assemble bathroom cabinets. Gluing adds an extra layer of stability and durability to the cabinets. Apply a thin bead of glue to the precut grooves before inserting the panels. If any glue leaks out from the seams, wipe it with a damp rag before it dries.

If you're tempted to use super glue, don't do it. When gluing ready to assemble vanity cabinets (or almost any wood project) use a glue designed specifically for wood (usually a PVA glue). Wood glue takes longer to dry and is more flexible when it dries. These are features that you want. The longer drying time makes it easier to position components and adjust them if necessary. It also gives the glue more time to penetrate the wood, forming a better bond. Because wood expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, you want to use a glue that's somewhat malleable as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a bathroom cabinet and a bathroom vanity?

The terms bathroom cabinet and bathroom vanity are sometimes used interchangeably, but there is a difference. A bathroom vanity is a set of cabinets that is topped with a sink. The cabinets underneath the sink are used to conceal the plumbing and for storage.

If you need extra storage space in your bathroom you can install additional cabinets that are used only for storage. These would be considered bathroom cabinets because they don't have a sink.

RTA bathroom cabinets are nearly identical to RTA kitchen cabinets. The major difference is the depth. The standard depth of kitchen cabinets is 24 inches. Bathroom cabinets are usually 21 inches deep.

Are RTA bathroom cabinets good?

RTA bathroom cabinets are a great option for most homeowners. They provide a combination of style, performance, durability, and price that is difficult to beat.

RTA vanity cabinets are available in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and finishes to suit differing tastes and nearly every situation. High-quality RTA bathroom cabinets are also as durable and long-lasting as pre-assembled or custom cabinets. If you purchase RTA cabinets made of real wood that have quality hardware (soft close drawer glides and soft close adjustable hinges) they will be nearly indistinguishable from assembled or custom cabinets.

Why are RTA bathroom cabinets more affordable?

RTA bathroom cabinets are more affordable for two reasons: labor and shipping. The cabinets are assembled by the homeowner instead of in the factory, so less labor is involved in their production. You're trading some of your own time for a lower cost.

RTA cabinets are also less expensive to ship because they take up considerably less space than assembled cabinets. Assembled cabinets are three to four times the size of flat-packed RTA cabinets so shipping costs are greater. RTA cabinets are less likely to be damaged during shipping as well because they are less cumbersome.

Can you paint RTA bathroom cabinets?

While it's possible to paint RTA bathroom cabinets, we don't usually recommend it. Unless you have the proper tools and experience, it's impossible to get the same results as factory-finished cabinets when painting them at home. If you can't find the color that you want, talk to one of our designers about custom finish options. We can order custom cabinetry in over 1500 colors.

How to assemble bathroom vanities?

Assembly of RTA bathroom cabinets is a straightforward process. All our RTA bathroom cabinets and vanities include instructions and all the necessary hardware for easy assembly. The only tools required are a screwdriver, rubber mallet, and wood glue.

Most homeowners find that assembling cabinets is easier than they expected. If you have any difficulty while assembling your bathroom vanity, our experienced customer service team will be happy to help.

What is the best material to use for a bathroom vanity?

The two main factors to consider when evaluating materials used for a bathroom vanity are humidity and the weight of the vanity top. The bathroom typically has the highest humidity of any room in your house because of the shower. Even in a half bath, your vanity is likely to get wet.

Particle board, made of wood chips and glue that are pressed under high pressure, is usually the cheapest cabinet option. It's a poor choice for kitchen cabinets and an even worse choice for a bathroom vanity because it is prone to moisture damage. Particle board is also more likely to suffer under the weight of a sink and countertop, especially if it gets wet.

The best RTA bathroom cabinets have plywood or solid-wood construction. They will stand up to the humidity of your bathroom, be more resistant to moisture damage, and safely hold the weight of your sink and countertop.

How much does a bathroom vanity unit cost?

The cost of RTA bathroom cabinets depends on several factors: size, wood type, and features. 30-inch vanities with soft close adjustable hinges and solid wood construction start around $250. If you choose wider RTA vanity cabinets, they become more expensive. Drawers are more costly than doors (they require more labor and materials). Maple and birch are common wood choices, especially for painted cabinets. Someone who wants a natural wood look may choose hickory, cherry, or white oak. But they will also pay more for those woods.

In addition to the bathroom vanity cabinetry, you'll need a top, sink, and faucet. These will often cost more than the cabinets themselves. Laminate tops are relatively inexpensive, but marble, granite, quartz, and acrylic tops are all popular choices that will increase the total cost of your bathroom vanity.
